It is always an exciting moment for any artist to receive either a Padmashri or an Academy award or Ustad Bismillah khan yuva puruskar for the younger generation. Though these are conferred upon deserving artists and definitely those people who have made their way up to the top positions but many times one feels the selectors could have opted for someone better.
Some how many times one wonders how come someone who comes below lineage of senior artists and have hardly proved themselves as soloists grab these momentos . Perhaps the itch to promote their own students will never die. The irony is that you have to have some experts in these committees and many times unsuspected favouritism is seen.
The Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar is given to artistes below the age of 40 years and it was introduced in the year 2006 with the objective of identifying and encouraging outstanding young talents in diverse fields of performing arts. It was introduced to give them the national recognition early in their life, so that they may work with greater commitment and dedication in their chosen fields. Here also some times a youngster who has hardly been seen as a soloist has been named for the award. Either these awards should be performance based as was the case in seventy’s and eighty’s, or the revered Guru’s should look beyond their own students and children.
Once a very good young solo dancer went to a senior dancer and officer in one of the goverrnment owned academies . The officer was pretty rude and asked her if a particular person would recommend her name. Spat came the reply “ why would he recommend my name I am not his student” and the young lady walked out of the room leaving behind her CD and requesting her to see the caliber first and then make an opinion about someone. The officer was definitely stunned but kept her cool .Good the lady brought the issue infront of her but I doubt if she ever even thought about it.
